Health-conscious 20-year-old hooked on vaping endures surgical removal of a portion of his once “healthy” lung, revealing alarming black spots

Sean Tobin, a fitness enthusiast, underwent a distressing ordeal at the age of 20 when a portion of his lung had to be removed due to extensive damage caused by his heavy vaping habit. Sean began vaping in 2018 and at the peak of his addiction, he would go through one 5,000 puff disposable vape per week. According to Sean, the vape was constantly in his hand for five years, from morning until night, in addition to occasional marijuana and THC oil usage.

The situation took a turn for the worse when Sean experienced a sharp pain in his back while at work in Tilton, New Hampshire, on July 20. Initially suspecting pneumonia, he rushed to a nearby urgent care center as the pain intensified throughout the day. Photos taken prior to surgery using an endoscope revealed disturbing black spots covering the surface of Sean’s lung. He attributes these spots to carbon deposits accumulated from his heavy vaping over the past five years.

Shockingly, doctors confirmed that his right lung had collapsed after conducting an X-ray. Sean was immediately transported to Concord Hospital in Concord, New Hampshire, where doctors performed a procedure to insert a chest tube between his ribs in an attempt to release the trapped air that was collapsing his lung and compressing his chest. When the lung failed to heal naturally after two days, Sean underwent a grueling surgery. Surgeons removed a small portion from the top of his lung and stapled it back together. To prevent further collapse, the affected organ was secured to his chest wall with adhesive.

The pre-surgery endoscopic photos depicting the black spots on Sean’s lung were disturbing and reinforced his belief that vaping was the cause. His doctors also supported this theory. Sean, who previously led a healthy lifestyle that included regular gym visits and mixed martial arts training, now regrets starting vaping and damaging his lungs. He mentioned that vaping became an ingrained habit that he did not treat with the care it deserved.

After two days in the hospital, Sean was discharged on July 27. However, he faces a month-long recovery period before he can resume his normal activities. While he was told that he should make a full recovery, Sean remains uncertain about any potential long-term effects. He now understands the risks associated with smoking or vaping and is committed to avoiding them. As an MMA fighter, he was initially concerned that his lung damage would prevent him from training, which is his passion and future career goal.

Sean’s story serves as a cautionary tale as he believed he was invincible and immune to the health risks posed by vaping. Unfortunately, millions of people worldwide vape, and there have been reported cases of lung collapse in young individuals that they attribute to vaping. The incident emphasizes the importance of understanding the potential dangers and taking steps to prioritize lung health.
