“Fun fact: I knew Beyoncé when she was 12 years old, or 11 years old, she used to be in a group by the name of The Dolls,” Usher revealed. “I don’t know if I could consider myself their babysitter, but I actually had a time when I had to watch The Dolls.”
Prior to becoming Destiny’s Child in 1996, Beyoncé’s group went by various names including GirlsTyme, Something Fresh, and The Dolls, as reported by an archived story from Essence magazine.
According to Usher, these babysitting duties took place at the house of songwriter and record producer Daryl Simmons. Usher happened to be present there at the time.
He found himself looking after Beyoncé and her group due to his older age. Usher described himself as their “chaperone, nanny, or something like that” because he was the oldest person present.
With a three-year age difference, Usher, 44, and Beyoncé, 41, have maintained a friendly relationship over the years. In 2008, Beyoncé even featured on Usher’s single “Love in This Club, Part II” alongside Lil Wayne.
