Aside from the obvious differences, such as the absence of snow and the humidity being on a whole new level, there is a distinct political atmosphere and an abundance of Southern hospitality down here. And of course, as a journalist who covers theme parks, having Disney World nearby brings me immense joy.
Since our arrival, we have resided in the same place — a sturdy, hurricane-proof beach house just steps away from the ocean. Our children, who were 6 and 8 at the time, have now grown into teenagers of 13 and 15. They have had the privilege of relishing fresh mangoes from our neighbor’s tree, spending leisurely days at the beach, and attending surf camps during the summers.
The life we have built in our quaint beach town is what captivates me the most about Florida. However, a major move like this is not without its moments of surprise. Here are a few things that have caught me off guard since our caravan of cars, kids, dogs, and moving vans arrived in 2016.
