Fire-Ravaged Maui to Receive Assistance from Los Angeles County Fire Canine Teams

Two canine teams from the Los Angeles County Fire Department will be part of a state Urban Search and Rescue team deployed in response to the devastating wildfires that have affected parts of Maui, officials announced.

Approved by Gov. Gavin Newsom, this effort also includes units from Riverside, Alameda, and Sacramento counties.

“The LACoFD extends our heartfelt condolences and prayers to the families who have lost loved ones, to the injured, and to all those who have been displaced or lost their homes and businesses due to the wildfires that have ravaged the beautiful island of Maui,” said Fire Chief Anthony C. Marrone. “During this difficult time, we send our Maui ohana strength and support.”

According to federal authorities, these fires, which began on Tuesday night, have claimed the lives of at least 93 people, making them the deadliest U.S. wildfire in over a century. The west end of Maui, including the town of Lahaina, has been completely leveled. Additionally, officials in Hawaii have reported the destruction of nearly 300 homes and other structures, some of which were landmarks.

The U.S. Coast Guard and Army National Guard troops are actively involved in rescue and relief operations throughout the island.

As a response to these devastating wildfires, California Governor Gavin Newsom announced on Thursday that resources and urban search and rescue teams will be deployed from California to assist in the recovery efforts. “California stands with the people of Maui and all Hawaiians amid these horrific wildfires that have claimed lives and destroyed the historic town of Lahaina,” stated Newsom. “Our state is providing resources to support our Pacific neighbors in their time of need.” However, the specific role of the California teams in the response is yet to be determined.

Supervisor Janice Hahn also expressed condolences and offered support in deploying local resources. “The County of Los Angeles understands the devastation and pain that Maui is currently experiencing,” said Hahn. “Our thoughts and prayers are with the people of Maui. I am grateful to FEMA and Governor Gavin Newsom for deploying USAR teams, including our LACoFD canine teams, to assist in the recovery efforts.”
