China criticizes Taiwan’s VP for short US trip, labeling them as a “troublemaker”

China’s Foreign Ministry criticized the visit of Taiwan Vice President William Lai to the U.S., branding him as a “separatist.” Lai arrived in New York City as part of his transit to Paraguay for the inauguration of the country’s president. China has consistently shown opposition to any meetings between Taiwanese and U.S. officials, often responding with military drills near Taiwan. The ministry referred to Lai as a troublemaker and expressed China’s determination to defend its sovereignty and territorial integrity. The ministry also accused Lai and other Taiwanese officials of relying on the United States to seek independence.

In response to China’s statement, Taiwan’s China-policymaking Mainland Affairs Council reaffirmed their commitment to defending national sovereignty and security. They emphasized their dedication to democracy and freedom and stated that they would not back down or surrender.

Lai has denied campaigning for Taiwanese independence and has pledged to maintain the country’s current status while giving Taiwan’s people the right to decide their future.

Tensions between China and Taiwan have intensified over the past year, especially following Nancy Pelosi’s visit to the island in August 2022. China has conducted military drills near Taiwan on multiple occasions.

China recently released a military documentary showcasing its preparedness to invade Taiwan.
