Amazon founder Jeff Bezos and his fiancée Lauren Sanchez have committed to establishing a $100 million fund aimed at supporting Maui’s recovery from catastrophic wildfires.

Sanchez, an influential figure in American media, revealed the formation of the Maui Fund through a poignant Instagram post, expressing her profound sadness over the calamity.

The funds will be utilized to aid in Maui’s recovery efforts both in the immediate aftermath and as future needs emerge, as highlighted in her post.

Hawaii Governor Josh Green characterized the fires as the “greatest natural disaster” ever faced by the state of Hawaii, according to the AP. The estimated cost of the fire’s devastating impact and losses is approximately $6 billion.

In 2021, Jeff Bezos purchased a 14-acre property in La Perouse Bay, located on Maui’s south shore, just 15 miles away from the wildfires.

According to Architectural Digest, the cost of the home was approximately $78 million, setting a record for the highest-priced property sale on the Hawaiian island.

Maui is a secluded destination favored by tech billionaires and celebrities, including Oprah Winfrey and Peter Thiel. The BBC reported that Winfrey has been actively engaged in volunteering efforts in Maui, distributing supplies at the war memorial stadium.

Jeff Bezos has an estimated net worth of $163 billion, as per Bloomberg’s Billionaires Index. He announced his intention in November to donate the majority of his wealth.

During the same month, Bezos pledged $100 million to Dolly Parton for her chosen charity, after she was awarded his Courage and Civility prize, as reported by Business Insider.

In November, Bezos also donated $123 million through 40 grants to organizations combating homelessness, according to Fortune.
