Carlos De Oliveira’s Arraignment Postponed Again: Mar-a-Lago Worker Accused in Trump Documents Case

The arraignment for Carlos De Oliveira, the property manager at Mar-a-Lago who is charged with mishandling sensitive government documents during former President Donald Trump’s tenure, has been postponed again. De Oliveira appeared before a federal magistrate judge in Fort Pierce, Florida, but did not enter a plea on the charges. The arraignment has been rescheduled for Tuesday, Aug. 15.

Meanwhile, Trump’s aide, Walt Nauta, pleaded not guilty to new charges at his second arraignment. Trump himself is facing additional charges as well. The updated indictment names De Oliveira as the third co-defendant in the case against Trump and Nauta. De Oliveira is charged with altering, destroying, mutilating, or concealing an object; corruptly altering, destroying, mutilating or concealing a document, record or other object; conspiracy to obstruct justice; and making false statements and representations during an interview with federal investigators.

The indictment also includes new charges against Trump, who was already facing 37 counts related to his handling of sensitive government records. The new charges, brought by the special counsel, include obstruction counts and an additional count of unlawful retention of national defense information. These charges stem from an incident where Trump allegedly showed a Pentagon memo on Iran to a writer and publisher during a meeting at his golf club in New Jersey.

Both Trump and Nauta have pleaded not guilty to the charges against them. The trial is scheduled to begin in May 2024.

The indictment reveals that security camera footage at Mar-a-Lago was deleted at the request of Trump, Nauta, and De Oliveira. Prosecutors allege that this was an attempt to prevent the footage from being turned over to the grand jury. The FBI obtained surveillance video in July 2022, which showed boxes being moved. During a search of the property, the FBI retrieved 102 documents with classification markings.

In addition, De Oliveira is accused of lying to investigators about the location and movement of boxes at Mar-a-Lago. He denied being part of a group that moved the boxes, but the indictment claims that he personally observed and helped move the boxes when they arrived at Mar-a-Lago.

This case is the first of two brought against Trump by the special counsel. He has also been indicted on charges related to his efforts to remain in office after the 2020 presidential election. In another case, Trump is facing 34 felony counts brought by the Manhattan district attorney for falsifying business records. He has pleaded not guilty in both cases.

During a recent speech, Trump mentioned that he may be indicted for a fourth time by a grand jury in Fulton County, Georgia, as part of an investigation into his attempts to reverse the outcome of the 2020 election.
