Pope Francis, the leader of the Catholic Church, called for an end to the ongoing political violence in Ecuador during his weekly general audience at the Vatican. His plea comes in response to the recent assassination of presidential candidate Fernando Villavicencio. The Pope expressed his condolences to Villavicencio’s family and the people of Ecuador in a telegram sent to Archbishop Alfredo Jose Espinoza Maeus of Quito. The Vatican has stated that Pope Francis condemned the “unjustifiable violence” and called for unity among citizens and political forces to achieve peace.

Villavicencio was fatally shot at a rally in Quito just days before the upcoming presidential election. The shocking incident was captured on video, showing Villavicencio entering a white pickup truck while shots were fired. According to a witness, the politician was shot three times in the head. In response to the assassination, Equatorian President Guillermo Lasso expressed his outrage and vowed that the crime would not go unpunished, blaming it on organized crime.

The investigation into the assassination has led to the arrest of six Colombian nationals who were allegedly present at the scene. Police have also revealed the possible involvement of notorious Ecuadorian drug kingpin Fabricio Colón Pico, who remains at large and is wanted for various crimes. This tragic event is not an isolated incident, as Ecuador has experienced a series of killings in recent months, highlighting the need for greater security and stability in the country.
