Study suggests ‘Friendly’ virus injections can combat antibiotic-resistant lung diseases

  • Bacteriophages: A Potential Solution for Bacterial Pneumonia, Says Israeli Study

Injecting patients with “friendly viruses” can effectively eliminate drug-resistant bacteria that are impervious to antibiotics.

These microscopic viruses, known as bacteriophages or phages, actively seek out and destroy bacteria.

Phages offer a potential solution to the growing problem of antibiotic resistance, wherein conventional treatments become ineffective and potentially life-threatening in routine medical procedures like hip replacements.

By 2050, this resistance is predicted to result in ten million deaths annually.

Until now, the effectiveness of phages as a medical treatment has been challenging to prove due to difficulties in procurement and administration.
