Aug. 10 (UPI) — Five U.S. residents detained in Iran for years have been moved from prison and placed under house arrest, indicating a potential imminent release, according to an attorney representing one of the individuals.

Attorney Jared Genser stated in an interview with CNN that four individuals, Siamak Namazi, Emad Sharghi, Morad Tahbaz, and an unidentified fourth American, have been released by Iranian officials.

The attorney, Jared Genser, acting as pro bono counsel for Namazi, revealed that they have been transferred from Tehran’s Evin Prison and are now expected to be held at a hotel under the supervision of Iranian authorities.

“The decision by Iran to move the American detainees from Evin Prison to house arrest is a significant development,” he commented. “While I am optimistic this may mark the first step towards their eventual release, it is important to view this as the beginning of the end at best.”

In response to these events, Adrienne Watson, spokesperson for the National Security Council, issued a statement acknowledging the release of the five Americans.

“While this is an encouraging step, Siamak Namazi, Morad Tahbaz, Emad Shargi, and the two unidentified Americans, who should never have been detained in the first place, remain in our thoughts. We will closely monitor their well-being and continue our efforts to bring them back home to the United States.”

“Given that ongoing negotiations for their eventual release are delicate, we are unable to provide detailed updates on their house arrest or our attempts to secure their freedom,” Watson added.

Tara Tahbaz, daughter of Morad Tahbaz, expressed back in March that the families had been urging the Biden administration to take a more active role in securing their release. This request came three months after WNBA star Brittney Griner was freed from Russia in a well-publicized prisoner exchange.

“President Biden and his administration have consistently assured our families that the well-being of our loved ones is a priority. Therefore, we implore him to meet with us and listen to our pleas firsthand,” Tara Tahbaz stated at the time.
