Ukraine’s national anti-corruption agency, known as the National Agency on Corruption Prevention (NACP), has taken action against Bacardi Limited, an international spirits company, for its business activities in Russia. Despite Ukraine’s ongoing conflict with Russia, Bacardi Limited has continued to make business transactions and pay taxes in Russia, which prompted the NACP to classify the company as an international war sponsor.
The NACP pointed out that Bacardi Limited had initially announced its intention to cease exports and advertising in Russia after the full-scale invasion of Ukraine. However, the agency discovered that this statement had been removed from the company’s official communication. Consequently, Bacardi Limited continued supplying its products to Russia and even sought new employees through job advertisements.
When approached for comment, Bacardi Limited had not responded at the time of writing.
According to the NACP, the Russian division of Bacardi Limited, known as Bacardi Rus, imported goods valued at $169 million during the war with Ukraine. Data from the Federal Tax Service of the Russian Federation indicated that Bacardi Rus experienced an 8.5% increase in revenue in 2022, amounting to 32.6 billion rubles. Furthermore, the company achieved a net profit of 4.7 billion rubles, representing a 206.5% increase compared to 2021.
The NACP revealed that Bacardi Rus paid over $12 million in income taxes to Russia.
Bacardi Limited is a privately held international spirits company, boasting over 200 brands and operations in more than 170 countries.
Since Russia’s invasion of Ukraine in February 2022, a substantial number of companies, more than 1,000, have voluntarily scaled back their operations to varying degrees, according to Yale University’s database.
