A recent study examined the effects of proton pump inhibitors (PPIs), a type of medication taken by over 15 million people in the US and UK each year to treat acid reflux and heartburn.
The study analyzed 5,712 individuals who were recruited for a health study in the late 1980s when they were between the ages of 45 and 64.
Participants were regularly asked about their medication use until 2011, when they were approximately 75 years old on average, to determine the duration of PPI use.
