Controversial Interior Transformation: A Woman’s Bold Move to Paint Vintage Couch Blue

  • A TikToker claimed to have transformed a “vintage” couch purchased by her mother for $15 using spray paint.
  • Her video series showcasing the transformation gained significant attention, but commenters had mixed opinions about the design idea.
  • Some felt that she had ruined the fabric, while others praised it as a clever alternative to discarding the couch.

A woman garnered mixed opinions on TikTok after spray painting an old couch in a completely different color. Some praised it as a clever hack, while others believed it was ruined.

On July 26, TikToker Kelsey Whittaker shared a video featuring herself sitting on a piece of furniture with a voiceover stating, “Let’s paint this vintage couch that my mom bought for me for $15.”

In the video, which garnered 238,000 views, Whittaker is seen covering the wooden parts of the couch with tape and plastic sheets. She then proceeds to spray paint the cushioned sections using “outdoor fabric spray paint” from Lowe’s, all done inside her studio.

On the same day, Whittaker uploaded another video showcasing more of the painting process, which received 562,000 views and over 230 comments, demonstrating a split opinion on the renovation.

While some praised the idea as a better alternative to discarding the couch, others expressed concerns that the spray paint could make the material rough and uncomfortable to sit on.

When asked if the couch felt hard to the touch, Whittaker responded to a comment saying, “Only the slightest!”

Other viewers mentioned the strong smell of the spray paint and questioned why the couch was not taken outside for the project.

Several viewers also wondered if the paint could transfer onto clothing even after drying, and inquired about spot-cleaning the couch if it were to get stained. Whittaker responded by admitting she hadn’t considered these factors.

Throughout her spray paint series, Whittaker gained over 900,000 total views. She continued to upload more insights into the project, concluding with a final look comparing the before and after, dedicated to the “haters.”

The video showcased an image of the original couch, accompanied by on-screen text representing negative comments labeling the idea as “stupid” and “dumb.” It then transitioned to a video of the final result. Commenters praised the end product, referring to it as “perfection” and “beautiful,” and commended Whittaker for her unique touch on the item.

Whittaker is a wedding and family photographer with over 73,000 followers on TikTok. She often posts videos about her photography business and renovated studio, which was previously an old church. She did not immediately respond to Insider’s request for comment.
