“Barbie” is set to join the prestigious billion-dollar club this Sunday. The delightful bubblegum pink film, produced by Warner Bros. Discovery and Mattel, is estimated to surpass $1 billion in global ticket sales before the end of the weekend. The final figures will be announced on Monday.

Reaching this milestone is a unique achievement, as only about 50 other films have accomplished it. Shawn Robbins, the chief analyst at BoxOffice.com, remarks, “Barbie’s entrance into the billion-dollar club is a testament to the growing exclusivity of this achievement in recent years. It is especially noteworthy as Greta Gerwig becomes the first female director to solely helm a billion-dollar-grossing film.”

Greta Gerwig now joins Anna Boden, co-director of Disney’s “Captain Marvel,” as the only two women who have directed billion-dollar films. “Captain Marvel” almost reached $1.13 billion in global box office earnings during its theatrical run in 2019, according to data from Comscore.

Additionally, this landmark success marks the first billion-dollar film for Warner Bros. Discovery following its merger in 2022. It is also only the second movie released in 2023 to surpass this milestone, with Universal’s “The Super Mario Bros. Movie” already exceeding $1.3 billion since its April premiere.

Paul Dergarabedian, senior media analyst from Comscore, praises the achievement, stating, “This extraordinary box office success for ‘Barbie’ showcases the power of seamless collaboration between filmmaking, marketing, distribution, fan engagement, and movie theater presentation. Additionally, a touch of ‘Barbenheimer’ magic definitely played a role.”

“Barbie” triumphs at a time when big-budget blockbusters have struggled to resonate with cinema audiences. Films like Disney’s “Indiana Jones and the Dial of Destiny” and sequels from Paramount’s Mission Impossible series and Universal’s Fast and Furious franchise, all failed to captivate viewers, with each film earning less than $200 million domestically.

“Barbie” proves that moviegoers still yearn for quality films and unique communal experiences outside the comfort of their homes. In the month of July, theaters of all sizes reported record-breaking ticket sales as audiences enthusiastically flocked to witness the magic of the pink-clad character.

“The reign of the box office juggernaut is far from over, as the upcoming weeks offer little competition, allowing ‘Barbie’ ample opportunity to build upon this remarkable success,” adds Robbins.

Disclosure: NBCUniversal and CNBC are owned by Comcast, the parent company.
