August 5th, 2023 (UPI) — In light of a money laundering investigation, Nicolas Petro Burgos, the son of President Gustavo Petro, and his ex-wife Daysuris Vasquez have been granted bail by a Colombian court on the condition that they cooperate.

A week ago, Nicolas Petro and Vasquez
were arrested for their alleged involvement in money laundering. Petro is facing charges for money laundering, while Vasquez has been charged with privacy violations.

Furthermore, authorities are investigating their alleged fraudulent acquisition of contracts and bribes given for the sake of political influence.

This investigation was initiated after Vasquez revealed in an interview that Nicolas Petro had received a contribution to his father’s campaign from drug smuggler Santander Lopesierra.

Prosecutors state that Petro admitted to keeping some of the money while transferring a portion to the campaign. They also mention Petro’s provision of “previously unknown information about the latest presidential campaign” and his commitment to providing documentation, technical evidence, and audio recordings to support the disclosed information.

The court has imposed travel restrictions on Nicolas Petro and Vasquez, preventing them from leaving Colombia or the city of Barranquilla where they were arrested.

Prosecutors confirm that both individuals have agreed to cooperate with the investigation, and Petro plans to resign from his position in the provincial assembly.
