Yoon Young-joon, the head of the Seoul Metropolitan Police Agency’s cybercrime unit, disclosed that five of the arrests were made in Seoul; however, the suspects remain unidentified, as is customary in such cases. The police revealed that the threats were posted on different online platforms between July 24 and Saturday morning and involved plans to harm individuals at multiple subway stations, as well as an amusement park south of Seoul. The arrests occurred in various parts of Seoul, including Gangnam, Seongdong, Gwanak, and the suburbs, through a combination of tips from concerned citizens and tracking the internet protocol addresses of the posters. Some suspects willingly surrendered, while others were apprehended at the specified subway stations where the attacks were purported to take place.
Among the arrested is a 14-year-old boy from Hanam, a suburb of Seoul, as stated by the police in southern Gyeonggi Province surrounding Seoul. The teenager allegedly posted on social media his intention to harm people outside a subway station the following day. Acting swiftly upon receiving an emergency call and identifying the poster, the police managed to arrest him while he was loitering at the specified subway station on Friday.
The suspect informed the police that his post was merely a joke and that he had no intention of causing harm. However, the police emphasized in their statement a stern warning to others, stating, “If you make such posts, even in jest, you will be arrested and face consequences. We will conduct thorough and expeditious investigations into murder threats that cause public distress.”
