Republican presidential candidate Chris Christie criticized his fellow GOP contenders for presenting a “false choice” regarding U.S. support in Ukraine. During his visit to Ukraine, Christie called out former President Trump, Florida Gov. Ron DeSantis, and entrepreneur Vivek Ramaswamy, all of whom have suggested reducing or cutting off aid to Kyiv in order to focus on domestic issues. In an interview with The Washington Post, Christie stated, “We have people in the party like Trump and Ron DeSantis, Vivek, who are giving people a false choice, which is ‘Well, we can only do one thing; we can either improve things in the States or we can help Ukraine,” emphasizing that the amount of money sent to Ukraine is a small percentage of the federal budget. Christie’s comments highlight the growing divide among Republicans on the issue of supporting the war in Ukraine. Christie made a surprise visit to Ukraine to meet with President Volodymyr Zelensky, becoming the second GOP presidential candidate to travel to the country after former Vice President Mike Pence. Christie stated on X (formerly known as Twitter), “It was an honor to meet with President @ZelenskyyUa in Ukraine and see firsthand the heroism Ukrainians have displayed in their fight against Russia.” Additionally, Christie expressed his hope that Republican voters would consider which candidates are capable of handling the complex issues that the next president will face, while also alluding to Trump’s legal battles. Christie previously stated that he supports Ukraine’s fight against Russia and would increase U.S. commitment to the country if elected president. In contrast, Trump has criticized U.S. spending on Ukraine, calling for a pause in aid until evidence of alleged “corrupt business dealings” involving Biden and his son is provided. Meanwhile, DeSantis has argued against escalating U.S. involvement in the conflict, but has since walked back his previous characterization of the war in Ukraine as a “territorial dispute.” A CNN poll showed that a majority of Americans, including a significant number of Republicans, oppose authorizing additional funding for Ukraine.
