Authorities Seek Additional Victims After Woman Successfully Escapes Kidnapper

  • A woman managed to escape from her kidnapper by breaking down a door within a makeshift cell, as reported by the FBI.
  • Negasi Zuberi, posing as an undercover policeman, is accused of luring the woman to his home.
  • The FBI is actively searching for other potential victims who may not have come forward yet.

A woman successfully escaped from her kidnapper by breaking down a metal door within the cell her abductor had constructed, and sought help from a passing car, according to the FBI. Law enforcement authorities are now seeking other potential victims.

The FBI’s Portland Field Office revealed during a press conference held on August 2, posted to YouTube by KGW News, that they had apprehended a man accused of kidnapping and sexually assaulting a woman.

In an alleged criminal complaint, the suspect Negasi Zuberi met the unidentified woman in Seattle after enticing her for sexual favors. Posing as an undercover police officer, he threatened her with a taser, handcuffed and shackled her, and drove her to Klamath Falls, Oregon.

According to the complaint, Zuberi, who also goes by multiple aliases, repeatedly assaulted the victim during their journey. Upon arrival in Oregon, he imprisoned her inside a makeshift cinderblock cell in his garage, secured with a metal door and a single hanging light bulb.

After spending several lonely hours in the cell, the victim realized her survival depended on escaping. She bravely used her bare hands to forcefully break down the door, which resulted in her hands becoming bloody. Stephanie Shark, assistant special agent at the FBI’s Portland office, commended her quick thinking and determination, stating that it possibly saved other women from enduring a similar nightmare.

Once free, the victim seized Zuberi’s handgun from his parked car and fled the residence. Assisted by a passing motorist, she was taken to Sky Lakes Medical Center, where she underwent a sexual assault examination. Subsequently, the victim led law enforcement officers to the house where she had been held captive, and they discovered evidence, including blood on the fence she had climbed to escape, connecting Zuberi to the location.

On July 16, officers executed a search warrant for Zuberi’s house and discovered the cell described by the victim. Photos presented in the complaint depict the cramped cinderblock cell, furnished with a solitary chair, electrical cords, and various plastic bottles. Cell phone records further confirm the correlation between Zuberi and the victim’s whereabouts during the alleged attack.

Zuberi was promptly arrested on the same day. An attorney representing him has yet to respond to inquiries for comment.

“I want to express my gratitude to the brave women who fought for their lives, leading us to where we are today,” stated Shark during the press conference. “Now, it is our responsibility to carry their burden and fight for them, as well as any other potential victims, and seek justice.”
