Donald Trump has announced his expectation of being charged later today in connection with a special counsel probe into alleged efforts to overturn the results of the 2020 US election.

In a post on his social networking site, Truth Social, the former president claimed that Jack Smith, the US Department of Justice special counsel, would be releasing a “Fake Indictment” against him this afternoon. Trump believes the timing of the indictment is intended to interfere with the Presidential Election of 2024.

Trump accused Smith of intentionally scheduling the indictment during his campaign. He is already facing federal criminal charges related to the mishandling of classified documents and state charges regarding alleged hush money payments made before the 2016 election.

The Department of Justice has chosen not to comment on the matter.

Smith’s investigation focuses on allegations of election meddling in 2020 and attempts to obstruct the certification of Joe Biden’s victory. This inquiry primarily targets Trump, his allies, and his supporters leading up to the January 6, 2021 attack on the US Capitol.

Last month, Trump revealed that he had received a letter from the DoJ informing him that he was the subject of a grand jury investigation, which he labeled a “witch hunt.” Members of Trump’s legal team recently met with prosecutors from Smith’s office.

The DoJ’s January 6 probe is widely regarded as one of the most significant legal challenges Trump currently faces, as he fights multiple criminal cases.

This would mark Smith’s second round of charges against Trump since being appointed by US attorney-general Merrick Garland to oversee investigations involving the former president.

In June, Trump faced numerous criminal charges, including conspiracy to obstruct justice, concealing documents in a federal investigation, and making false statements. The case stemmed from sensitive government files seized by the FBI at his residence in Mar-a-Lago, Florida. Trump pleaded not guilty, making it the first federal criminal case against a former US president.

Last week, the DoJ added new charges in a superseding indictment, accusing Trump of attempting to delete surveillance video footage at Mar-a-Lago. The ex-president dismissed the move as a “desperate” attempt to “harass” him.

Despite mounting legal risks, Trump, the leading contender to secure the Republican presidential candidacy in 2024, remains committed to his campaign. He regards the cases against him as a “disgrace” and “election interference” by the Biden administration.

Another legal obstacle awaits in Georgia, where a special grand jury has been investigating alleged interference by Trump and others in the 2020 elections. If Fani Willis, the district attorney for Fulton County, decides to press charges in this separate case, they are expected to materialize later in the summer.

In April, the ex-president pleaded not guilty to 34 felony counts of falsifying business records in a case led by the Manhattan district attorney. Trump was accused of orchestrating a scheme to suppress damaging stories that posed a threat to his presidential candidacy in 2016, which involved payments to an adult film actress in exchange for her silence.
