One man in Cleburne, Texas, shared his discovery of a fuchsia katydid in a field near his house with the Houston Chronicle.
“I noticed a hint of pink and saw it land on a piece of grass near me,” said Marshall Woodruff. “Realizing it was an uncommon specimen, I quickly grabbed it for closer inspection.”
Similarly, a man in Lincoln, England, encountered a similar pink critter in his garden, as reported by the BBC.
“At first, I didn’t think much of it until I learned how rare it actually is to see one,” Jak Ward told the BBC. “I was quite excited and managed to capture a few pictures before it hopped away.”
Estimations from the University of Wisconsin-Madison’s Division of Extension suggest that only about one in every 500 katydids displays pink coloring.
The genetic mutation that causes erythrism, a condition resulting in abnormal hues in an animal’s appearance, is responsible for the unique color variation in these bugs.
