A woman lacking any medical qualifications pretended to be a doctor for over a year, writing prescriptions for patients using a relative’s identity, according to authorities.
In a statement released on Thursday, the Ocean County Prosecutor’s Office in New Jersey revealed that Maria Macburnie assumed the identity of a doctor named Dr. Fe Almazon-Condit at Shore Medical Associates in Toms River from March 2022 to June of this year.
Macburnie, 62, has been charged with practicing medicine without a license, forgery, health care claims fraud, and three counts of distributing a controlled dangerous substance.
The statement stated, “Macburnie presented herself as Dr. Fe Almazon-Condit, a relative of Macburnie’s who holds a valid medical license.”
“During this time, Macburnie prescribed medications, including controlled dangerous substances, to patients,” the statement continued.
In addition, she submitted insurance claims and billed for services rendered when “Dr. Almazon-Condit” was unavailable to see patients.
Macburnie was apprehended on Wednesday and is currently being held in Ocean County Jail until a detention hearing, as reported by Insider. It is unknown if she has legal representation at this time.
Prosecutors have also requested that anyone who believes they have been treated by Macburnie contact their office.
A recorded message from Shore Medical Associates disclosed that the facility is permanently closed, as reported by NBC News.
