Controversy Surrounds Beauty Gonzalez’s Use of Gold Pieces Linked to ‘Disturbed Graves’

Beauty Gonzalez received criticism for her choice of accessories at the recent GMA Gala, where she wore excavated gold eye and mouth covers. The actress wore a nude corseted gown and adorned herself with reworked gold pieces. In an Instagram post, she explained that the accessories were centuries-old pieces from Butuan and Surigao, around 800 to a thousand years old. She claimed that these pieces can be seen at the Ayala Museum and the National Museum, and she wanted to showcase Philippine gold and express her identity.

However, cultural critic Marian Pastor Roces took issue with Gonzalez’s choice of accessories. In a Facebook post, Pastor criticized her for wearing items that may have been illegally obtained if not belonging to the National Museum or the Bangko Sentral. She questioned the use of death masks as a necklace and described the act as “odious” and “desecrating graves.” She further stated that ignorance blended with arrogance cannot be fashionable.

Some netizens agreed with Pastor’s sentiments, expressing their disappointment and disgust in the actress’s choice. However, there were others who praised Gonzalez for highlighting and appreciating Philippine ancestral gold.

As of now, Gonzalez has not publicly commented on the matter.
