Doctors’ dismissal of bruise under baby’s eye as stage-four CANCER causes mother’s profound agony

A mother from Greater Manchester has shared her shocking experience of how a seemingly harmless bruise under her toddler’s eye turned out to be cancer. Little Harper Walker developed a small bruise under her right eye in February, which later caused her eye to change shape and droop. Initially, her parents Jenny and Adam didn’t think much of it, but when the bruise grew, they took Harper to the GP. However, the doctor didn’t raise any concerns. Unsettled by this response, Jenny sought a referral to an eye specialist and finally got an appointment for April. However, worried about their daughter’s worsening condition, the duo rushed her to A&E. Scans revealed that Harper had stage four, high-risk neuroblastoma, a type of cancer that affects nerve cells in the body. The cancer had spread from her adrenal gland to various parts of her body, causing blueish lumps in the skin and bruising around the eyes, which are common symptoms of neuroblastoma. Currently, Harper’s parents are awaiting news on how she responds to treatment after finishing her induction chemotherapy. Depending on the results, she may need an operation to remove the primary tumor or undergo high-dose chemotherapy. Additionally, she will receive radiotherapy to target the original site of the cancer and immunotherapy to detect and destroy cancer cells. Neuroblastoma is a rare cancer that mainly affects young children. It usually starts in the abdomen and can spread to other parts of the body, such as the liver and skin. Treatment options vary depending on the cancer’s stage and the risk of its recurrence, with surgery, chemotherapy, and radiotherapy being common methods used.
