Torrential flooding in Nova Scotia, Canada has resulted in four individuals going missing and many residents being forced to evacuate their homes. The Royal Canadian Mounted Police reported that the missing individuals, including two children, were traveling in a submerged vehicle. Fortunately, three others in the car were able to escape. Separately, a teenager and another man were also reported missing after their vehicle became submerged on a flooded road.
Efforts to locate and rescue the missing individuals are ongoing, but authorities have urged the public not to attempt their own searches due to the dangerous conditions caused by the flooding. Various rescue crews have been deployed throughout the province, including the volunteer group Halifax Search and Rescue. This dedicated group has been tirelessly working to rescue stranded motorists, evacuate residents from their apartments, and assist in the rescue of approximately 20 people trapped in Bedford Place Mall.
An evacuation order has been issued for the area surrounding the St. Croix River, spanning Hants and Halifax Counties, after a dam was at risk of breaching. However, it has been reported that the dam is no longer in danger. Mayor Abraham Zebian expressed relief and gratitude for the successful management of the situation, emphasizing that people’s safety is the top priority.
Thankfully, no injuries have been reported thus far, although the Royal Canadian Mounted Police officers have faced significant challenges rescuing individuals marooned on roadways, bridges, and campgrounds. The Halifax Regional Municipality has advised its residents to avoid traveling on roads due to severe flooding and the presence of abandoned vehicles.
Approximately 150 people have been displaced due to the floods, and flash flooding has occurred throughout the municipality. Heavy rain is expected to continue until Sunday, with a severe thunderstorm warning in effect. The Canadian weather service has forecasted patches of rain until midnight.
