National outrage sparked in India after a video emerges showing two Manipur women being paraded naked and molested by a mob

Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi finally broke his silence on the deadly ethnic clashes in India’s northeast, specifically addressing the brutal assault of two women in Manipur state. The incident, captured in a viral video, showed the women being paraded naked, assaulted, and dragged by a mob of young men. Prime Minister Modi called the acts unforgivable and expressed his anger and pain over the incident. While he did not directly reference the violence in Manipur, he emphasized the importance of women’s safety and condemned the shameful act.

The video is a reflection of the larger conflict in Manipur, which has resulted in over 130 deaths since May. The violence stems from a controversy surrounding affirmative action, with Christian Kukis protesting against the Hindu Meiteis’ demand for special status, enabling them to purchase land in Kuki-populated areas and receive government jobs. The clashes continue, despite the presence of the army, and both factions have formed armed militias. Many villages are still subjected to gunfire, causing over 60,000 people to seek refuge in relief camps.

The assault on the two women occurred on May 4, just one day after the violence erupted in Manipur. They were part of a family attacked by a mob, resulting in the rape and murder of two male members. The state police have made their first arrest in the case, and the Chief Minister of Manipur, Biren Singh, has promised a thorough investigation and strict actions against all perpetrators, including the possibility of capital punishment. The Supreme Court of India has expressed its concern over the incident and demanded the government provide information about the steps taken to apprehend the accused.

The two women, now safe in a refugee camp, belong to the Kuki-Zo community, according to the Indigenous Tribal Leaders’ Forum. India’s Women and Child Development Minister, Smriti Irani, has called the incident condemnable and inhuman and assured that efforts are being made to bring the perpetrators to justice. However, the opposition Congress party president, Mallikarjun Kharge, has accused the ruling Bharatiya Janata Party of turning democracy into mobocracy and demanded that Prime Minister Modi address the issue in Parliament.

The European Parliament recently passed a resolution urging Indian authorities to take action to stop the violence in Manipur and protect religious minorities, especially Christians. The Indian government condemned this resolution, considering it interference in its internal affairs.
