Nine-year-old Grace Anstey of Barrie, Ont., experienced a life-altering event last year when a cartwheel resulted in a dislocated knee. Since then, Grace has suffered from six significant dislocations and multiple minor ones, leaving her family desperate for a solution to her recurring knee issues. These constant dislocations have led Grace to live in fear, even during simple activities like walking up stairs. Her mother, Melanie Anstey, explains that Grace’s mental health is suffering due to the pain and fear associated with each dislocation. Despite doctors recommending surgery, the family has struggled to find a hospital and surgeon to perform the procedure. The Hospital for Sick Children in Toronto referred them to Sunnybrook Health Sciences Centre, only to be told that arthroscopic surgery is no longer permitted for young patients. Grace’s physician has referred her to children’s hospitals in Hamilton and Ottawa, but this would entail starting the consultation process all over again. SickKids refused to comment on why Grace couldn’t receive surgery there. Sunnybrook, where Grace’s doctor primarily practices, has a minimum age requirement of 12 for this specific surgery due to the specialized expertise and equipment required for younger patients. While the Ontario Ministry of Health promises to invest in pediatric hospitals, the uncertainties surrounding Grace’s case continue to affect her well-being. Without surgery, Grace must try to walk as soon as possible after each dislocation to prevent any impact on her leg’s growth. However, this leaves her vulnerable to further injury. Despite her young age, Grace understands the consequences of walking and is afraid of the pain that awaits her. As a result, she has refrained from participating in physical activities, feeling sad and excluded from her peers. Grace eagerly awaits the day she can play soccer and run freely with her friends again.
