Passenger Takes Control and Safely Lands Plane During Pilot’s Medical Emergency

  • A pilot on a six-seater aircraft experienced a medical emergency on Saturday afternoon.
  • This led to a brave passenger taking the controls and attempting to land it herself.
  • She crash-landed the aircraft near a runway in Martha’s Vineyard, with the left wing splitting in half.

Authorities report that a passenger on a six-seater airplane displayed remarkable bravery when she assumed control of the aircraft after the pilot experienced a medical emergency. The incident occurred in West Tisbury, Massachusetts around 3:15 p.m. on Saturday. Despite the intense situation, the 68-year-old woman successfully landed the 2006 single-engine Piper Meridian Turbo Prop near a runway, with the left wing splitting in half upon crash-landing.

According to the Massachusetts State Police, the male pilot, aged 79, encountered the medical emergency during the final approach. Although the specific details remain undisclosed, the police department shared an official press release on the matter. The passenger sustained minor injuries while the pilot was airlifted to a hospital in Boston for medical treatment.

It remains uncertain whether the pilot sustained additional injuries during the landing or if they were solely related to the initial medical emergency. Preliminary statements suggest that only two individuals were on board the plane. The flight originated from Westchester, New York, as reported by NBC Boston.

The passenger’s courageous attempt to land the aircraft caused it to crash onto a grassy area near the runway at Martha’s Vineyard Airport. Law enforcement officials confirm that the plane made a belly landing without the landing gear, resulting in the left wing fracturing. Emergency responders had to extract the pilot from the wreckage before transporting him to a hospital in Boston, where he is currently in a serious, life-threatening condition.

As per the ongoing investigation, the National Transportation Safety Board leads the effort with assistance from the Massachusetts State Police and the Federal Aviation Authority. Despite reaching out for a comment, Martha’s Vineyard Airport has not responded to Insider’s request.
