Russian scientists have alerted to the possibility of powerful solar flare activity on Monday, which could disrupt short-wave communications. This warning comes after three solar flares were observed on the sun on Sunday.

The Fedorov Institute of Applied Geophysics in Moscow stated that there is a possibility of class X flares, including proton flares, which may lead to deteriorating short-wave radio conditions.

X-class flares are the largest explosions in the solar system and can cause long-lasting radiation storms. Proton flares are storms of solar energetic particles, mainly composed of protons.

Solar flares occur when the strong magnetic fields in and around the sun reconnect. These flares can impact Earth’s magnetic field, potentially damaging satellites and communication equipment, according to NASA.

In 2022, a geomagnetic storm caused by a large burst of radiation from the sun resulted in the disruption of 40 newly launched SpaceX satellites.

The Fedorov Institute reported the observation of three solar flares on Sunday, with one lasting 14 minutes and causing disruption in radio communication.
