Florida Governor Ron DeSantis (R) has openly acknowledged the pushback he received from some of his supporters regarding the six-week abortion ban he signed into law earlier this year. During the Family Leadership Summit event in Iowa, DeSantis expressed his commitment to support governors like Kim Reynolds of Iowa when they introduce bills that advance the cause of life. He emphasized the importance of the issue and his willingness to take a stand despite losing certain supporters who disagreed with his pro-life stance.
DeSantis believes that as someone in office, it is crucial to do what is right and stand by one’s principles. In April, he signed the six-week abortion ban into law in Florida, although it is currently blocked due to pending legal challenges. At present, abortion is only permitted in Florida up to 15 weeks.
Similarly, Reynolds signed a six-week ban after the state legislature’s approval during a special session, highlighting the complicated nature of the abortion issue for Republican presidential candidates. Some contenders have avoided discussing federal restrictions on the medical procedure in order to distance themselves.
When asked about signing a six-week ban as president, DeSantis proclaimed his desire to be a “pro-life president.” He commended Reynolds for signing a heartbeat bill and expressed his pride in his own role as a pro-life governor in Florida, stating that he would continue to support pro-life legislation.
DeSantis believes that cultivating a culture of life is imperative for the United States.
