Junior doctors encouraged to take advantage of 5-day NHS strike by organizing a picnic

Junior doctors have been advised to make the most of their upcoming strike by engaging in recreational activities such as picnics, BBQs, and sports matches. Rather than spending all five days on picket lines, union leaders have encouraged doctors to focus on spending time with friends and family. This advice comes as the NHS is facing a record-high waiting list of 7.4 million patients. However, the British Medical Association (BMA) believes that doctors taking some “down time” during the strike is a valuable use of their time and should not be seen as indulgent or wrong. The strike, scheduled to last for five days, will involve nearly 47,600 junior doctors refusing to provide any care, including in A&E and cancer wards. The BMA is demanding a 35% pay rise over one year or 49% over two years. Talks between the BMA and ministers have collapsed, leading to the strike action. Consultants, who are also involved in a pay dispute with the government, are planning to strike on July 20 and 21, with the exception of providing urgent and emergency care.
