Masked Individuals Armed with Weapons Burn Down Public Market in Mexico, Resulting in 9 Fatalities

Armed and masked individuals initiated a devastating incident by setting fire to a public market located in Toluca, a central Mexican city. Tragically, nine innocent lives were claimed as a result of this act. According to authorities, the assailants arrived at the market, launched a barrage of gunfire, proceeded to douse a portion of the market with a flammable substance, and finally ignited the flames before swiftly fleeing the scene.

In light of this heinous act, investigators are scrutinizing private security guards who seemingly abandoned their posts during the attack. While three of the deceased victims appear to be minors, their identities have not been confirmed as of yet.

As of now, no group or individual has come forward to claim responsibility for this brutal attack in Toluca, which is situated about 40 miles west of Mexico City. Toluca holds a population of nearly one million people and is considered part of the capital’s metropolitan area, with many of its residents commuting to work in the capital.

Sadly, instances of fires being set in public markets in Mexico are often attributed to gangs seeking protection payments from vendors. However, there have also been cases where vendors themselves engage in disputes over ownership of commercial spaces within these markets.

The State of Mexico’s prosecutors, where Toluca is situated, have stated that one of the primary lines of investigation pertains to internal conflicts over the possession of commercial spaces within the market.

This attack coincides with the confirmation from prosecutors in the neighboring state of Guerrero that four taxi drivers were fatally shot and one of their vehicles was set ablaze over the weekend in and around the state capital of Chilpancingo.

To shed further light on the situation, it should be noted that Toluca experienced gruesome violence associated with drug gangs in late June. During that time, seven dismembered bodies were found on a downtown street in addition to a menacing message from one of the gangs.

Guerrero is currently the battleground for a bloody turf war between the Familia Michoacana and several other criminal organizations, one of which is believed to be responsible for the aforementioned murders in Chilpancingo.

Last week, Toluca was already on high alert due to the discovery of at least two mutilated bodies, accompanied by signs claiming responsibility from the violent drug cartel known as Familia Michoacana.

Originating in the neighboring state of Michoacan in the early 2000s, the Familia Michoacana has been largely driven out of its home state but has found refuge in the State of Mexico and adjacent Guerrero state. The cartel has become notorious for their merciless and bloody attacks on police officers in Mexico State, as well as on local residents in Guerrero.
