‘Numerous Individuals Abound’

In a unique and creative approach, an easyJet captain at Arrecife Airport in Lanzarote announced to the passengers that due to a combination of factors such as the total weight of the passengers and luggage, the weather conditions, and the length of the runway, it would be best if some passengers volunteered to disembark to ensure a safe takeoff. The pilot, while expressing gratitude for the passengers’ arrival, pointed out the large number of people on the plane.

The pilot explained that the heavy aircraft, in conjunction with the short runway and adverse weather conditions, would make it impossible for the plane to take off safely. Taking into account the current heat and wind conditions in Lanzarote, the pilot concluded that it would be unsafe to proceed with all the passengers on board. He requested volunteers to stay behind, emphasizing that reducing the aircraft’s weight was the only solution to the problem.

An onboard video captured the passengers’ reactions, with many shaking their heads in disbelief at the unexpected request. Out of the requested 20 volunteers, 19 passengers stepped forward and were offered 500 euros each for their inconvenience. easyJet confirmed that this was a routine operational decision made for safety reasons. Despite the delay, the flight departed and landed safely in Liverpool.
