Intense flash floods hit various parts of New York state on Sunday, resulting in the transformation of streets into murky waterways.

“We’ve experienced rain and flash floods in the past, but an occurrence like this typically happens only once a summer,” commented New York Governor Kathy Hochul in an update to Spectrum News about the flooding on Business Insider.

The New York State Police issued a Facebook post on Sunday, stating that several roadways, including State Route 9W and Palisades Interstate Parkway, were heavily flooded and experiencing washouts.

The New York State Police said in a Facebook post on Sunday that “numerous roadways consisting of State Route 9W and Palisades Interstate Parkway are experiencing heavy flooding and washouts.”

“The Palisades Parkway Northbound is closed from exit 14 to Long Mountain Traffic Circle. Please avoid the area!!!” read the Facebook post.

Several Twitter users shared shocking photos and videos of roads and streets flooded with water.

A Twitter user named NsfwWx captured a photo of a flooded street in Orange County near West Point Military Academy.

Another Twitter user, Danielle Vallone, shared a video of a different flooded street in Orange County, showing several cars trapped in rapidly rising floodwaters.

Mike Lyons, another Twitter user, captured a photograph of a flooded road with four vehicles stranded in the floodwaters, reaching up to the vehicles’ doors.

The West Point Garrison and Community advised residents to refrain from using the roads, emphasizing that missing drain covers made walking and driving unsafe in a Facebook post.

The National Weather Service, New York State Police, and West Point representatives did not immediately respond to Insider’s request for comment during non-business hours.
