Mexican Journalist Discovered Deceased Days After Disappearance

The unfortunate demise of reporter Luis Martín Sánchez Iñiguez from the Mexican national newspaper La Jornada has been confirmed. The lifeless body of Sánchez Iñiguez was discovered on the outskirts of Tepic, the capital of Nayarit, according to the report published by La Jornada on Saturday.

Before his disappearance, Sánchez Iñiguez, aged 59, was reported missing by his wife, who also stated that his computer and cellphone were missing. The Nayarit state prosecutors’ office had launched an appeal to locate him. Tragically, it has now been revealed that Sánchez Iñiguez was murdered. The prosecutors’ office suspects that his killing was motivated by his work in journalism. The authorities have not disclosed the content of the two handwritten signs found with the body, although such signs are often associated with drug cartels.

The body was identified by Sánchez Iñiguez’s relatives, who revealed that he had been deceased for a day or two prior to the discovery. Notably, Sánchez Iñiguez was last spotted in Xalisco, a town in Nayarit linked to heroin and opium smuggling. Regrettably, this marks the second murder of a journalist in Mexico this year, with José Ramiro Araujo, a news photographer, losing his life to violence in the northern state of Baja California. The year 2022 has proven to be one of the deadliest in terms of journalist fatalities, with 15 individuals killed in Mexico.

Disturbingly, just days after Sánchez Iñiguez went missing, another journalist named Jonathan Lora Ramírez was abducted in the same area. On Friday, armed and masked men forcefully entered Ramírez’s home in Xalisco and took him away. However, there is a glimmer of hope as Ramírez was found safe and in good condition the following day. Additionally, Osiris Maldonado, a former journalist turned teacher, has been missing since July 3. Maldonado left for work in the morning and has not been heard from since.

The abductions and murder of these media workers are currently being investigated by the authorities, who are exploring the possibility of a connection to their profession. The Committee to Protect Journalists has expressed its condemnation of Luis Martín Sánchez Iñíguez’s killing and called for an immediate and credible investigation from the Mexican authorities.
