A court in El Salvador has sentenced former President Mauricio Funes to six years in prison for tax evasion, according to a recent ruling. This marks the second conviction and prison term for Funes this year. However, Funes currently resides in Nicaragua and holds Nicaraguan citizenship, which does not allow for the extradition of its citizens.
In addition to his prison sentence, Funes has been ordered to pay over $200,000 after being found guilty of evading around $85,000 in taxes dating back to 2014.
Earlier this year, Funes was sentenced to 14 years in prison for his involvement with criminal groups and failure to protect residents.
David Munguia, a former justice and defense minister, has also been sentenced to 18 years in prison in connection with the same case. The Attorney General stated that both Munguia and Funes acted as gang members by negotiating a truce between criminal groups in exchange for electoral favors.
Funes served as the president of El Salvador from 2009 to 2014 and was granted Nicaraguan citizenship in 2019.
