President Joe Biden is once again advocating for stricter gun control measures, including a ban on semi-automatic rifles, in response to a series of devastating and senseless shootings leading up to the July Fourth holiday.

Multiple mass shootings in Baltimore, Philadelphia, Fort Worth, Wichita, and Lansing have resulted in the deaths of at least 10 individuals, with many others left injured.

According to NBC Chicago, Chicago experienced a string of shootings over the holiday weekend, resulting in five deaths and over 30 injuries.

In a statement on Tuesday, President Biden emphasized the need to reinstate the ban on assault weapons, implement universal background checks, promote safe storage of firearms, and eliminate gun manufacturers’ immunity from liability.

President Biden’s remarks coincide with the one-year anniversary of a mass shooting at a Fourth of July parade in Highland Park, Illinois, which resulted in seven fatalities and nearly 50 injuries.

Earlier this year, Illinois took steps to combat gun violence by banning the sale of semi-automatic weapons and high-capacity magazines.

“The recent incidents demonstrate the urgent need for further action in Illinois and throughout the nation to address the epidemic of gun violence that is tearing apart our communities,” stated President Biden.

According to the Gun Violence Archive, there have been 346 mass shootings in the United States this year, defined as incidents involving the shooting or death of four or more individuals, excluding the shooter.
