National announces the upcoming supermoon viewing and highlights the awe-inspiring ‘Buck Moon’ captivating the global skies.

Did you notice that the moon appeared larger and brighter than usual on Monday night? You’re not alone in this observation. Captivating images from various parts of the world captured the first supermoon of the year, known as the “Buck Moon.” It rose on Monday morning and reached its peak illumination at 7:39 am ET.

A supermoon refers to a full moon that occurs when it is within 90% of its closest point to Earth. In the case of the “Buck Moon,” it came as close as 361,934 kilometers from our planet. If you missed the chance to witness it, don’t worry. The supermoon will still be visible and appear full until Tuesday evening, as confirmed by NASA.

According to The Old Farmer’s Almanac, July’s “Buck Moon” is just one of the four supermoons that will illuminate the night sky this year. The Almanac has named it the “Buck Moon” as it coincides with the full-growth period of buck deer antlers.

Although a supermoon technically appears about 7% larger and brighter than a regular full moon, this difference might be imperceptible to the naked eye due to various conditions, as explained on the Almanac’s website.

The next supermoon, called the “Sturgeon Moon,” will be visible on August 1 and will reach its peak illumination in the afternoon. August will also have another supermoon, known as the “Blue Moon,” which will be visible on August 30 and come as close as 357,344 kilometers from Earth. Finally, the last chance to witness a supermoon this year will be on September 29 with the “Harvest Moon” peaking in the morning.
