Journalist Imprisoned Since March Receives Long-Awaited Second Consular Visit

US Ambassador Lynne Tracy gained permission to visit Wall Street Journal reporter Evan Gershkovich, who has been detained in Russia since March on espionage charges. Tracy had previously visited Gershkovich in April, and the US had been requesting access to him for several weeks. Gershkovich, a 31-year-old US citizen, was arrested in Yekaterinburg while on a reporting trip in Russia. A Moscow court recently upheld a ruling to keep him in custody until August 30. The State Department stated that Tracy reported Gershkovich to be in good health and remaining strong despite his circumstances, and that the US Embassy would continue to provide support to him and his family. Additionally, they expect Russian authorities to allow continued consular access. Gershkovich and his employer deny the espionage charges, and the US government has declared his detention to be wrongful. The arrest has caused concern among journalists in Russia, as authorities have not provided any evidence to support the allegations. Gershkovich is currently being held in Moscow’s Lefortovo prison, known for its harsh conditions. He is the first American reporter since 1986 to face espionage charges in Russia. In that case, Nicholas Daniloff, a Moscow correspondent for US News and World Report, was arrested by the KGB but released 20 days later in a prisoner swap.
