Two people have been fatally shot at the Chisinau International Airport in Moldova by a Tajikistan national who was denied entry. The incident occurred on Friday, according to law enforcement authorities.
Moldova’s President Maia Sandu confirmed that the perpetrator shot a border police officer and an airport security employee. The suspect has been taken into custody and is receiving medical attention for an injury.
According to officials, the suspect seized a gun from a border guard and opened fire while being escorted at the airport. Witnesses reported hearing multiple gunshots.
One witness, Olena Shevelyova, described the chaotic scene and how they were instructed to seek shelter during the incident. Ambulances were heard near the airport, adding to the confusion.
Shevelyova, a Ukrainian executive who was waiting to board a flight to Milan, expressed her confusion and fear during the incident. President Sandu expressed her condolences to the affected families, emphasizing their loss as a great pain for them.
In response to the incident, state institutions in Moldova have been placed on high alert, with increased police and law enforcement presence throughout the country, according to President Sandu.
Prime Minister Dorin Recean stated that a wounded passenger is currently receiving medical attention following the shooting.
