Kelly Clarkson Addresses Comparison to Carrie Underwood: ‘No Rivalry’

  • Kelly Clarkson addressed the rumors about her “beef” with Carrie Underwood on an episode of “Watch What Happens Live.”
  • She clarified that there is no animosity between them because they don’t actually know each other.
  • Clarkson expressed frustration with the constant comparison and competition between female artists, noting that it doesn’t happen as frequently with male artists.

Kelly Clarkson wants to clarify that there is no feud between her and Carrie Underwood.

During her appearance on “Watch What Happens Live,” a viewer asked about her relationship with fellow “American Idol” alum Carrie Underwood. Both women have achieved great success since their time on the show.

The viewer stumbled over Underwood’s name and mistakenly called her “Carrie Wood.” Clarkson jokingly responded, “I’m going to forever call her Carrie Wood now. She’s like Dolly Wood!”

Without waiting for the viewer to finish her question, Clarkson stated, “I think I know where you’re going with this. People always compare us, but we don’t even know each other well enough to be compared.”

She continued, “We’ve literally run into each other a few times. There’s no feud between us.”

However, it turned out that the viewer’s question was about Underwood’s appearance on “The Kelly Clarkson Show.”

The audience erupted in laughter, and Clarkson playfully pretended to leave the studio in embarrassment. When she returned, she defended herself, saying, “Look, everyone always asks me about being pitted against each other!”

Regarding Underwood’s appearance on her show, Clarkson said it was awesome and that she would love to have her back. Due to COVID restrictions, Underwood appeared remotely via video link.

Returning to the topic of comparison between female artists, Clarkson expressed frustration and stated, “Everybody always pits us against each other, and I don’t know why they do that. They don’t do it with male artists. It’s only females.”

Clarkson and Underwood, who won seasons one and four of “American Idol” respectively, have consistently rejected the narrative of being rivals. In 2018, Clarkson responded to a poll comparing them by saying they are both successful and blessed. Underwood agreed, advocating for women to be celebrated rather than forced to compete.
