Colombia’s President, Gustvao Petro, commended the efforts of soldiers, Indigenous volunteers, and government officials who played a key role in rescuing four children from the jungle after a plane crash. In a ceremony held at the presidential palace, President Petro awarded 86 medals to those involved, highlighting the collaboration between Western technologies and traditional Indigenous knowledge in the preservation of life.
The children, who were Indigenous siblings, were aboard a small plane with their mother and two other adults when it crashed in the Amazon jungle on May 1. Unfortunately, the three adults did not survive, leaving the children alone. Consequently, around 70 Indigenous people joined forces with over 150 soldiers, utilizing helicopters, GPS devices, and drawing inspiration from their ancestral knowledge of the jungle to locate the children. Finally, on June 9, four volunteers from the Muruy people discovered the siblings.
Despite their rescue, the children are currently recovering at a military hospital in Bogota. President Petro expressed his gratitude, stating, “The military with its satellites, and the Indigenous people with their potions—including ayahuasca—and invoking the spirits of the jungle, together, found life.”
During the medal ceremony, a Belgian shepherd named Drugia was honored as well. Drugia was the mother of Wilson, the heroic sniffer dog who aided in the search for the children. Unfortunately, Wilson disappeared on May 18 while chasing a scent. Although searchers followed his tracks, leading them to the general area where the children were eventually found three weeks later, it is unlikely that Wilson will be found. General Pedro Sanchez expressed his appreciation, saying, “We are going to remember Wilson forever, as we do every soldier and policeman who has offered their lives to protect Colombia.”
