Tom Brokaw Reflects on Retirement while Discussing Incurable Blood Cancer

Tom Brokaw, the renowned journalist, is opening up about his health battle and his remarkable career in journalism. Diagnosed with multiple myeloma in 2014, Brokaw retired from his illustrious 55-year career in 2021. In an upcoming interview with his former “Today” show co-anchor Jane Pauley, he candidly discusses his fight against blood cancer and the overwhelming challenges he faced.

Brokaw reveals, “I’ve had a bad experience.” He admits that he used to believe bad things wouldn’t happen to him, but as he grew older, he developed this condition. Despite the difficulties, he emphasizes the importance of trying to control the disease as much as possible.

Multiple myeloma is a cancer that forms in plasma, the white blood cells responsible for fighting infections. Cancerous plasma cells overtake healthy ones in the bone marrow, posing a grave threat to one’s health.

When Brokaw was first diagnosed, his doctors didn’t expect him to live much longer. He previously shared that his condition had gone into remission, but unfortunately, it returned, forcing him to retire from the career he was passionate about.

The transition was undoubtedly challenging for Brokaw, who spent his entire career at NBC. From being the White House correspondent to co-anchoring the “Today” show and briefly hosting “Meet the Press,” his decades-long tenure on TV was legendary.

In his interview with Pauley, Brokaw also discusses his latest book, “Never Give Up: A Prairie Family’s Story.” The book serves as a tribute to his resilient parents, whom he admires deeply. Brokaw describes his father, who started working dangerous jobs at a young age, as the toughest kid in town, recalling stories of his father’s experiences, like being lowered headfirst into a deep well with a rope tied around his legs.

The full interview with Tom Brokaw and Jane Pauley will air on CBS at 9 a.m. EST on Sunday, and it will be available for streaming on Paramount+.
