June 21 (UPI) — Nova Bus, a prominent player in eco-friendly transportation and a member of the Volvo group, announced on Wednesday that it will cease vehicle production in the United States by 2025. The company plans to concentrate its efforts on its facilities in Quebec, Canada, where its headquarters are located.
“Based on an evaluation of profitability, which has been consistently incurring financial losses over the years, we have made the strategic decision to discontinue bus production in the U.S. by 2025,” stated Anna Westerberg, Chairperson of the Nova Bus Board of Directors.
The company’s manufacturing facility in Plattsburgh, New York, will gradually be phased out, with production expected to continue until the first quarter of 2025.
Ralph Acs, President of Nova Bus, expressed that although this strategic decision was challenging, it will result in improved profitability and ensure long-term competitiveness by shifting the company’s focus to Canada.
The transition will gradually impact the full-time positions at Nova Bus by 2025. Acs emphasized that the company will provide support to its employees, many of whom have been loyal staff members for numerous years. Efforts will be made in collaboration with sister Volvo companies, local authorities, surrounding businesses, and communities to help affected individuals find new employment opportunities.
For New York State Assemblyman Billy Jones, the news of Nova Bus closing its Plattsburgh plant was devastating. Jones expressed his sympathy for the 350+ employees affected by this decision, acknowledging the significant impact it will have on the local communities and the region’s transportation manufacturing hub.
