President Biden derided Sen. Tommy Tuberville’s hold on military nominees due to the Department of Defense’s abortion policy as “bizarre” during a fundraiser in Los Gatos, Calif. Although he did not mention Tuberville by name, Biden referred to him as a “former football coach from Alabama.” Biden expressed his surprise, stating he had not witnessed such holds before, emphasizing his extensive experience despite his youthful appearance.
Tuberville implemented the hold to protest the Pentagon’s policy, which allows individuals to seek reimbursement for abortion services across state lines. This hold has halted over 200 military promotions. White House press secretary Karine Jean-Pierre also criticized Tuberville’s action, asserting that it poses a threat to national security and military welfare.
During the fundraiser, President Biden acknowledged the need to further address reproductive rights issues. He firmly believes that the decision regarding abortion should remain between a woman and her doctor. While acknowledging the difficulty of passing a constitutional amendment, Biden proposed the enactment of a national law that would codify the principles established in Roe v. Wade across all states.
