A Heartrending Farewell at Filipowicz Funeral: Father and Son Remembered after Superstorm Sandy Tragedy

A funeral was held for a father and son who tragically lost their lives during Superstorm Sandy. John Filipowicz and his son, also named John, were found in their basement, holding each other as the floodwaters engulfed their home. Despite being warned to evacuate, the son refused to leave his father’s side. The emotional funeral took place at Staten Island’s St Charles Church and was attended by numerous mourners, including John Sr.’s wife, Christine, and their surviving children. The two were laid to rest wearing the jerseys of their favorite New York Jets players. The deaths of the Filipowicz family were part of the 19 fatalities on Staten Island due to Sandy, making it the hardest hit borough in New York City. Brother and uncle, Neil Filipowicz, who also served as a firefighter during 9/11, described the bond between the father and son as incredible and stated that they loved each other deeply. Neil discovered the bodies of his brother and nephew after becoming concerned when he was unable to reach them during the storm. The basement was filled with water, causing damage to the structure and ultimately resulting in the tragic loss of two lives. John Jr., described as a prince who always did the right thing, was planning to become a nurse and was deeply devoted to his girlfriend. The funeral was a somber and heartbreaking farewell to two members of the Filipowicz family.
