McDonald’s Japan Raises Prices in Urban Areas due to Rising Costs

TOKYO – The Japanese operator of McDonald’s restaurants announced on Monday that it will increase prices at 184 city center branches, which is approximately 6 percent of its 3,000 stores, in order to offset rising rents and labor costs.

Previously, only 40 stores in certain city centers and special locations such as airports and motorway service stations were subject to “city center pricing”.

McDonald’s Holdings Company Japan stated that the new pricing will take effect on July 19.

Many businesses have started passing on the increased expenses of imported energy and raw materials to consumers.

As Japan’s largest fast-food chain, McDonald’s has led the way with three price increases across all of its outlets since March 2022, including the most recent one in January.

According to a press release, the latest round of price hikes at McDonald’s will range from 10 to 90 yen per item or set, with the delivery price of a Big Mac increasing from 540 yen to 590 yen ($4.16).

The yen has depreciated against the dollar, falling to 141.81 to the dollar from around 133 at the beginning of the year.
