Public sector officials urged to cease gaslighting practices

There appears to be a noticeable disparity between the personal experiences of readers with the NHS and the reassurances provided by healthcare authorities that these concerns are unfounded. In a letter dated Monday, three prominent figures emphasized that “people throughout our NHS and social care system are making extraordinary efforts to address the backlogs in care while simultaneously addressing the ongoing impact of Covid-19.”

While it is not disputed that these efforts are being made and that lockdowns have had an impact on healthcare, it should be noted that NHS leaders sought to extend Covid restrictions, which would have exacerbated the situation.

The issue at hand pertains to the results achieved. Individuals are being forced to endure months-long waits to consult with specialists and receive a potentially life-threatening diagnosis. The problems are further compounded by cancelled surgeries, overcrowded A&E departments, an overwhelmed ambulance service, and the difficulties encountered in securing an appointment with a GP. It is pointless for NHS authorities to deny these realities.

The truth is, people can perceive the failures of the NHS for themselves. Everyone has a personal story that highlights its shortcomings or, in some cases, even worse. By challenging the experiences of millions, these officials are engaged in a form of “gaslighting,” a term used to describe the act of causing someone to doubt their own reality. This phenomenon is also evident in other sectors of the public service, such as the Passport Office and the DVLA, where numerous accounts of abysmal service are dismissed as misleading or uncommon. We also witness it in assertions that the visa system for Ukrainian refugees has functioned well, despite the glaring evidence of its utter failure. This behavior needs to cease.
