Mississippi City’s US Military Base Constructs Wall as Protective Measure against Stray Bullets

  • A Navy base in Mississippi has taken a unique approach to protect itself from stray bullets by constructing a wall made of shipping containers.
  • Several homes on the base have been struck by stray bullets originating from a nearby apartment complex.
  • According to a base spokesperson, the container barrier is a temporary solution to address the issue.

A military base in Gulfport, Mississippi, has taken measures to protect its residents by erecting a wall made of shipping containers. The decision comes after bullets from an adjacent gunfight struck homes on the base. The base initially placed more than 20 shipping containers around its perimeter last year in response to gunfire from a nearby apartment complex, as reported by a local television station.

Captain Jeff Powell emphasized the base’s commitment to ensuring a safe and secure environment for its residents. However, Gulfport continues to experience shootings. Recently, three people were shot, and separate incidents occurred on the same day. Martha Lockhart-Mais, a retired schoolteacher living near the base, expressed her disapproval of the container wall, mentioning that one of her former students was fatally shot last year. She believes people should be able to coexist without barriers.

Local pastor and CEO of Climb CDC, John Whitfield, stated that while he finds the wall’s appearance unfavorable, he understands its practicality. Becky Shaw, a spokesperson for the base, clarified that the container barrier is a temporary solution, and the Navy is considering constructing a concrete wall near the apartment complex to ensure the safety of the base, personnel, and families.
