A transplant was his only option for long-term survival. Jonathan didn’t know much about being a kidney donor at first, but he knew he wanted to do it for his father. They went through a series of tests to determine if they were a match, including blood type compatibility and tissue matching.
They received the news in February 2023 that they were a match on all fronts, and the doctors gave the green light for the donation process to begin. Over the next few weeks, they met with their teams of transplant surgeons and coordinators to ensure their health and commitment to the process.
Despite the risks involved, the surgery went smoothly on March 29. Both father and son had no major complications and recovered well. They have regular checkups to monitor the kidney’s function and make necessary adjustments to medications.
After the two-year mark, donors should have annual checkups with their primary care physicians. Overall, both Jose and Jonathan are grateful for the successful transplant and look forward to living normal lives.
