CNN’s Hero of the Year is Nelly Cheboi, Creator of Computer Labs Empowering Kenyan Schoolchildren

Nelly Cheboi, a former software engineer who left her lucrative job in Chicago to create computer labs for Kenyan schoolchildren, has been named the 2022 CNN Hero of the Year. Cheboi’s nonprofit, TechLit Africa, has provided donated and upcycled computers to thousands of students in rural Kenya, giving them access to education and a brighter future. She accepted the award with her mother, who played a significant role in her education. In her acceptance speech, Cheboi and her mother performed a meaningful song from her childhood. As the CNN Hero of the Year, Cheboi will receive $100,000 to expand her work, in addition to a $10,000 cash award and additional grants and support from The Elevate Prize Foundation.

Growing up in poverty in rural Kenya, Cheboi understood firsthand the hardships of poverty and hunger. Despite her limited computer experience, she received a full scholarship to college in the US and fell in love with computer science during her studies. Overcoming the challenges of learning new computer skills, she realized the waste of discarded computers and decided to transport them back to Kenya. In 2018, she co-founded TechLit Africa, which refurbishes donated computers and distributes them to partner schools in rural communities. The organization offers classes and opportunities for students to learn from professionals in various fields, expanding their skills and preparing them for future employment.

Cheboi’s goal is to partner with 100 more schools and provide students with skills in coding, graphic design, and marketing. She believes that education opens up opportunities and wants to empower the TechLit graduates to find online jobs and explore the world. With her recognition as CNN Hero of the Year, she has the resources to expand her impact significantly.

CNN’s Hero of the Year was announced during the 16th Annual “CNN Heroes: An All-Star Tribute,” co-hosted by Anderson Cooper and Kelly Ripa. The event featured celebrity presenters and performances dedicated to honoring individuals making a difference in their communities. Aidan Reilly, Debra Vines, and Carie Broecker were among the other honorees recognized for their inspiring work. Additionally, two teenagers, Ruby Chitsey and Sri Nihal Tammana, were honored as 2022 Young Wonders for their remarkable contributions.

CNN has partnered with GoFundMe to enable online donations to this year’s Top 10 CNN Heroes, and Subaru is matching all donations up to $50,000 for each honoree. The public is encouraged to nominate individuals who are making a positive impact in their communities for CNN Hero recognition in 2023.
